NFL insider identifies Browns as front-runner to land Jadeveon Clowney

Jadeveon Clowney still remains on the free-agent market, but the veteran defensive end is in no rush to sign a new deal despite originally seeking a contract worth $20 million and eventually lowering to $17 million.

While someone will eventually sign Clowney, Yahoo's Charles Robinson believes one specific team will be a good fit for the 27-year-old.

“I still think it’s the Browns. I really do. I’ve been on this for a while,” Robinson said on The Pat McAfee Show.  “They have a ton of cap space. They have Olivier Vernon, if they cut Olivier Vernon tomorrow, it’s $15 million cap space."

Clowney spent the 2019 campaign with the Seattle Seahawks, recording three sacks, one interception, four forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, 21 solo tackles, seven tackles for a loss and 13 quarterback hits. His numbers have declined every year since 2017, and many teams are hesitant to sign him due to his lengthy injury history.

However, the Browns do have plenty of cap space to sign Clowney to a "prove your worth" deal in 2020. If he wants a longer term deal, it seems he'll need to sacrifice some money in order to do so.

Other teams interested in Clowney reportedly include the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens and Tennesee Titans. The waiting game will continue on both sides, but it would be surprising if no deal is reached before the start of the 2020 campaign.
