NFL matching donation from Raiders' Carl Nassib to The Trevor Project

As part of becoming the first active NFL player on a roster to announce he is openly gay on Monday, Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib explained he was donating $100,000 to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit organization that works to prevent suicide among LGBTQ youths. 

On Tuesday, the NFL confirmed to Outsports it is matching that $100,000 pledge. 

"The NFL family is proud of Carl for courageously sharing his truth today," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Monday in response to Nassib's Instagram post. "Representation matters. We share his hope that someday soon statements like his will no longer be newsworthy as we march toward full equality for the LGBTQ+ community. We wish Carl the best of luck this coming season." 

As Michael David Smith noted for Pro Football Talk, Nassib has received support from Raiders teammates and other NFL personalities online since Monday. Raiders owner Mark Davis and coach Jon Gruden also backed the 28-year-old:
