Betting money on a sportsbook doesn't quite hit the same away as laying money down against a close friend of yours. When betting against a buddy, it becomes a matter of pride, of bragging rights.
But when you're an NFL player, it's pretty tough to get away with it, as former LSU teammates learned on their first month in the league: Washington Commanders QB Jayden Daniels and New York Giants WR Malik Nabers had to call off a $10,000 bet they made between each other ahead of their rookie seasons.
In a recent interview on All Facts No Brakes with Keyshawn Johnson, Daniels admitted to having bet Nabers for who was going to win offensive rookie of the year.
Fast forward to today, the tone has quickly changed, as both rookies "realized" it was against the league's sports gambling policy, which has led to multiple players being suspended in recent years.
"We learned about it last night," Daniels told reporters in rookie minicamp. "Me and him had a conversation and we canceled the bet. Obviously, we don't want to get in trouble with anything. So we're just focused on being the best players for our respective teams."
To be completely fair, Daniels did suspiciously said "(Malik) wasn't supposed to tell nobody" when asked about it by Johnson. Of course, with nothing really happening, this will go down as nothing but a funny story for two rookies ready to compete against each other for years to come in the NFC East.
As for Nabers, he might've gotten away with an almost guaranteed loss. It takes an underwhelming rookie QB class for a non-signal caller to take home the award, so he was better off taking better odds in a sportsbook somewhere else (I kid, that's something he also can't do, obviously).
