NFL suspends Jets' coach and former Cowboys WR Miles Austin for violating league's gambling policy

New York Jets wide receivers coach and former Dallas Cowboy, Miles Austin, wasn't on the sidelines during Thursday night's 19-3 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, and now we know why.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the league has suspended Austin for at least a year for violating the NFL's gambling policy. Austin is appealing the suspension.

Pelissero adds that there's no indication that Austin bet on NFL games.

Austin's attorney, Bill Deni, said in a statement that the NFL suspended Austin for wagering from a mobile account on "table games and non-NFL professional sports."

"Miles did not wager on any NFL game in violation of the Gambling Policy for NFL Personnel," the statement read. "He has been fully cooperative with the NFL's investigation. He is appealing his suspension."

Austin spent ten seasons playing in the NFL with the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, and Philadelphia Eagles. Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cowboys in 2006 out of Monmouth College, Austin played eight seasons in Dallas, making the Pro Bowl in 2009 and 2010.

After playing his final NFL season in 2015, Austin transitioned into coaching. Austin was the Cowboys' pro and college scouting intern from 2017 to 2018 and then joined the San Francisco 49ers as offensive quality control coach before becoming the Jets' receivers coach ahead of the 2021 season.
