NFL to host game in Brazil during the 2024 season

Some NFL players might want to start taking Portuguese lessons during the offseason.

On Wednesday, the league announced that it will host a game in Sao Paolo's Corinthians Arena. It'll be the first time an NFL game will be played in Brazil and anywhere in the continent of South America. Teams have yet to be announced.

Brazil marks the fourth different country to open its borders to America's most popular league, after England, Germany and Mexico.

Before this announcement, the furthest south an NFL game has taken place has been Mexico City, where it last hosted a game in 2022. (Notably, at least one team with California ties has played in every game there, perhaps signaling which ones had a sizeable fan base in the country.)

While there's still a matter of completing this current season, could there already be a clue for one of the teams that'll play in this historic game? The NFL launched its Global Markets Program in January 2022, which designates international countries for each of the individual franchises for fan engagement and sponsorship opportunities.

As of December 2023, Brazil is the designated market for just one team, the AFC East-leading Miami Dolphins. The Fins played in one of the league's international games this year, losing a close one to the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs in Frankfurt back in Week 9 on Nov. 5.

The NFL had five games overseas this season, including the Dolphins/Chiefs game. Two of them were "hosted" by the Jacksonville Jaguars, who have made London their second home of sorts in recent years.
