NFL Week 14: Houston Texans vs. New York Jets betting picks, preview

A monsoon is expected in East Rutherford on Sunday, making this Houston Texans vs. New York Jets game an interesting study from a betting perspective.

Houston Texans vs. New York Jets: Betting Odds

Spread: Houston -3.5, Over/under: 33.5 points, Houston -175 | New York +145

Houston would own the final AFC wild-card spot if the season ended today, sitting at 7-5. The Texans have gotten excellent play out of rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, and first-year head coach DeMeco Ryans has done an impressive job in his coaching debut for his former team.

The Texans have had one of the more efficient offenses, but one has to wonder what the injury to standout rookie WR Tank Dell will do for Stroud and this passing attack. We're not one to want to doubt Stroud now after seeing what he's been able to do over the last few months.

On the flip side, it's been another year of quarterback disaster for the New York Jets. After trying out Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian the past few weeks, the Jets have turned back to Zach Wilson. Despite a strong defense, the Jets cannot move the ball on offense, making it extremely hard to trust this offense to produce much of anything. The Jets are 4-8 on the season.

The Texans are 6-6 ATS this year while New York is is 4-7-1. Both teams are 8-4 to the under.

Betting Picks for Houston vs. New York

Under 33.5 points

We likely already were leaning toward the under in this game based on the play of each defense and their season-long betting trends toward the total.

It's made even more appealing when you look at the forecast here. Fifty mph gusts and heavy rain are expected throughout Sunday, which should make for an interesting watch but a potentially ugly game.

We're projecting a run-heavy game plan for both sides, which should make this game quick and low scoring. The only choice has to be the under, even at this low number.
