The Dallas Cowboys are in dire need of some help in their backfield, and the Chicago Bears may have the answer for them.

Bleacher Report’s Maurice Moton suggests that the Cowboys pursue Bears running back Khalil Herbert in a trade, advising Dallas to send a late-round pick to Chicago in exchange for him.

The Bears signed D’Andre Swift in free agency earlier this month, which will certainly relegate Herbert to a backup role after he led all Chicago halfbacks in rushing this past season.

That isn’t to say Herbert wouldn’t get any playing time at all behind Swift. He would surely still get a fair amount of touches, but not to the extent that people would have expected before a disappointing 2023.

Herbert, who played his collegiate football at Virginia Tech, was selected by the Bears in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.

He played in every game during his rookie campaign, rushing for 433 yards and a couple of touchdowns while averaging 4.2 yards per carry.

Then, in his sophomore season, Herbert raised some eyebrows after registering 731 yards and four scores on the ground, logging a robust 5.7 yards per attempt.

As a result of Herbert’s surprising production in 2022, Chicago allowed David Montgomery to walk in free agency, as the club seemed prepared to hand Herbert the featured role.

Herbert ended up underwhelming with the opportunity he was given, as he totaled just 611 yards and a pair of touchdowns while recording 4.6 yards per tote in 2023.

Dallas is currently employing Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle in its running back room, so Herbert would be a breath of fresh air for the club even after his so-so campaign this past year.

Of course, the Cowboys can always draft a halfback, but having Herbert in tow would provide them with some insurance and potentially give them a nice duo depending on who they select in the draft.
