Ever since Kirk Cousins went down with an injury on October 29, the Minnesota Vikings have started at least three other backups in his place, one of whom includes Nick Mullens. On Sunday, Mullens and the team fell short to division leaders Detroit Lions, culminating their season in yet another loss.
Mullens didn’t hide his emotions following the outing, letting his frustrations out in front of the media.
“You want to do your best,” he said, as per ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. “It just sucks.”
Mullens was able to amass a total of 396 passing yards, making 30 completions out of 44 attempts. He added two touchdowns but threw two turnovers as well. All in all, the 28-year-old finished the game with a passer rating of 92.6.
The Vikings’ season woes
The Vikings’ loss to the Lions means they end the season on a four-game losing streak, winning only one out of their last seven outings. Their performance during the latter half of the season was a stark contrast to what the team showed during October and early November.
Despite starting the season with a 0-3 record, the Vikings rallied back, winning six out of their next seven games. Following Week 10’s victory over the New Orleans Saints, Minnesota held a 6-4 record. Unfortunately, the landslide of losses commenced afterward.
As the Vikings enter the offseason, Nick Mullens’ future with the team remains uncertain. In five games, the quarterback was able to complete 100-of-148 pass attempts for a total of 1306 yards. Overall, he finishes the season with seven touchdowns and eight interceptions.
Mullens’ ideal wish of a season finale win may not have taken place, but based on his 396 passing yards on Sunday, he might still be playing as a backup for next season. If not with the Vikings, then perhaps elsewhere.
