Built for Aaron Rodgers, the Jets continue to modify their offense to better fit current starting quarterback Zach Wilson.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett invested countless hours in the company of Rodgers to custom fit the West Coast-style offense to the preferences of the former Packers quarterback. When Rodgers was lost for the season four snaps into the 2023 season, that version of Hackett's scheme went with him.
"It's not an excuse, but the reality is it was built a certain way and we're trying to adjust on the fly, which is a challenge," Saleh said Monday.
Wilson has lost two starts since replacing Rodgers in the first quarter of the overtime win Week 1. He has four interceptions, two touchdowns, a 52.4 completion percentage and has been sacked eight times.
Saleh said Wilson is the Jets' quarterback and any questions about adding another should be directed to general manager Joe Douglas.
"He's our unquestioned quarterback. He's not the reason we lost yesterday," Saleh said.
The Jets host the Kansas City Chiefs (2-1) on Sunday, visit the Denver Broncos (0-3) on Oct. 8 and welcome the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles (2-0) on Oct. 15 before a bye week.
Saleh said Wilson is the starter against the Chiefs, who are riding high after a 41-10 shellacking of the winless Chicago Bears (0-3).
"It starts with me. I've got to find a way to be better," Wilson said Sunday.
Wilson, the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2021, is 8-16 as an NFL starter.
