One trade, cut and signing the Dallas Cowboys should make

The Dallas Cowboys followed up an NFC East title with a forgettable performance against the Packers in the playoffs. While the arrow is pointing up, there’s still much work to do for 2024.

With that in mind, here’s a trade, cut and signing the Cowboys should make.

TRADE: Bring in WR Stefon Diggs

Diggs has been a force since joining the Bills in 2020 and finished last year with his sixth-straight 1,000-yard season. But rumblings of his discontent in Buffalo won’t go away and ESPN’s Mike Greenberg thinks it’s time for him to join his brother, cornerback Trevon Diggs in Dallas.

"It is clearly over in Buffalo," Greenberg said. "I don't know why, but it is. So, why not unite him with his brother in Dallas? He could be the missing piece to an offense that needs to take another step late in the season."

Diggs still has four years left on his deal so it would take multiple picks to get him. But the Bills are already $54M over the cap, so losing a disgruntled player like Diggs and drafting his replacement could be an option for Buffalo.

CUT: WR Brandin Cooks

If Dallas can pair Diggs with CeeDee Lamb, there’d be no reason to keep Cooks around. He carries a $10M cap hit next season but the team can save $8M if they release him after June 1.

The team traded for Cooks last offseason with hopes that he would emerge as a legitimate No. 2 receiver. That honor went to tight end Jake Ferguson as Cooks finished the regular season with just 657 yards.

SIGNING: OT Tyron Smith

After the quarterback, left tackle may be the most important position in football. Dallas has a good one, as Smith’s eight Pro Bowl nominations clearly demonstrate, but he doesn’t have a contract for 2024.

Pro Football Focus ranks Smith as the best tackle available and the 14th-best free agent overall. If the Cowboys want to go all-in this offseason, a new contract for Smith would be a good start.
