The Green Bay Packers enjoyed a productive 2023 season where their rebuild got a massive boost thanks to one Jordan Love.
Now that their franchise QB is once again defined, it’s now up to the front office to provide him with as many quality players as possible. One of the key players they want to keep around to help Love lead the team to the Super Bowl is a man who’s become a beloved icon at Lambeau Field.
Green Bay Packers offer qualifying deal to running back AJ Dillon
Cheesehead TV, a dedicated fan-started website that follows everything that has to do with the Packers, wrote about the team-friendly deal that would keep the Boston College product in Wisconsin.
The piece also provided specifics on the provision that would otherwise be foreign to many NFL fans:
Right now, only AJ Dillon and Josiah Deguara would be eligible. A team can sign up to two players per season to such a contract. The device allows a team to pay a player more money than the team has to count against its salary cap limit. In that way, it is similar to the better-known Veterans Qualifying Contract.
If the contract is looked upon in this manner, it becomes more understandable that the Packers consider Dillon as a viable depth option at RB and would like to keep him around as he starts to reach his peak.
The thing that makes AJ Dillon a worthwhile signing in Green Bay
While all professional running backs are fast, they can be further categorized as speedy or powerful. Dillon can be placed under the latter category due to his 6-foot, 247-lb frame.
It also helps that Dillon is performing well as a rotation option for Matt LaFleur. He started the most games last season at six, and he ran for 613 yards and two touchdowns. He also made 22 receptions for 223 yards.
With the way he’s been playing so far, it wouldn’t be weird to see Dillon become a Packer for a long time.
