Packers clear more than $10M in cap space with Kenny Clark restructure

The Green Bay Packers found some much-needed cap space Wednesday by restructuring the contract of two-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Kenny Clark. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the move cleared $10.8 million of space for the team by moving much of Clark's deal into a sizable signing bonus and spreading other money across two voidable years.

Clark, 26, was a first-round pick in 2016 and has emerged as one of the best defensive linemen in the NFL. After years as a reliable run-stuffer for the Packers, Clark recorded a career-best 13 quarterback hits in 2021.

More importantly, the move for the Packers makes room for the team as it works to retain other star players. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams both have uncertain futures in Green Bay, while linebacker De'Vondre Campbell and receivers Marques Valdez-Scantling and Allen Lazard are among the other key players headed toward free agency.

The Packers are expected to use the franchise tag to retain Adams, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, which will cost the team about $20 million in 2022. Rodgers still hasn't announced a decision about his future with the team.
