Packers cut Blake Bortles after Aaron Rodgers reports to training camp

With disgruntled quarterback Aaron Rodgers reporting for training camp amid rumors he and the Green Bay Packers are close to officially agreeing to a deal that could allow him to leave the organization after the upcoming NFL season, the Packers had too many signal-callers on the roster.

As ESPN's Rob Demovsky tweeted Tuesday, that's no longer an issue.

Demovsky first reported the Packers are releasing veteran and 2014 first-round pick Blake Bortles. The news isn't surprising, as Bortles joined the Packers in May via a minimum-salary deal that included zero guaranteed money so he could get in some work behind Jordan Love. The 2020 first-round pick served as Green Bay's temporary QB1 until Rodgers returned Tuesday.

The Packers later confirmed they released both Bortles and fellow quarterback Jake Dolegala.

Bortles entered the league when the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him third overall in the 2014 NFL Draft, but he ultimately flamed out in Jacksonville and last played in a regular-season game as a member of the Los Angeles Rams in December 2019. His future in the league is in doubt, but teams will inevitably need reliable arms this summer and fall, if only for practice-squad duties.
