Packers hiring Tom Clements to convince Aaron Rodgers to stay?

It seems at least some associated with the Green Bay Packers this winter don't agree with franchise great and Hall of Famer Charles Woodson about potentially trading quarterback and newly-crowned four-time NFL Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers this year.

Aaron Wilson reports for Pro Football Network that the Packers are expected to hire Tom Clements as their next quarterbacks coach. Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Clements would replace Luke Getsy, who recently left the Packers to become offensive coordinator with the Chicago Bears.

Clements originally joined the Packers as quarterbacks coach in 2006, one year after the franchise selected Rodgers in the first round of the draft even though they had legend and Hall of Famer Brett Favre atop their depth chart at that time. The 68-year-old was promoted to Green Bay offensive coordinator in 2012 and then became an assistant head coach for 2015 and 2016.

Following the 2016 campaign, Clements spent time outside of the NFL but then worked with the Arizona Cardinals as passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2019 and 2020 seasons before he retired. However, it seems he's back in what most will consider a blatant attempt to convince Rodgers to play at least one more year with the only NFL employer he's had for nearly two decades.

Following Green Bay's playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers last month, Rodgers remarked he and general manager Brian Gutekunst were "in a really good place." Perhaps the 38-year-old has signed off on this move and already decided where he'll call home through next season.
