Packers' Jordan Love to see significant preseason snaps this summer?

It sounds like new Green Bay Packers starting quarterback Jordan Love will participate in more than just a handful of snaps during exhibition games this August.

"It’s kind of trial-and-error," Packers offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich said about determining aspects of the playbook that mesh well with Love's skillset, per Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal. "I think the preseason, that’s going to be very important as well. But just going out there (during organized team activities), getting him around all these young receivers and tight ends and working with our vets and allowing him to put his leadership on there, put his stamp on it (will be valuable). And then once we see how it’s going, then you can go in that direction."

According to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk, Aaron Rodgers last played in a preseason game in 2018. While the new QB1 for the New York Jets is a four-time NFL Most Valuable Player who turned 39 years old this past December, Love is an unproven 24-year-old with only 83 career regular-season passes on his résumé.

Individuals associated with the Packers such as quarterbacks coach Tom Clements have preached patience regarding Love attempting to replace a future Hall of Famer at the sport's most important position.

"As a quarterback you have to learn from your mistakes, try not to repeat them," Clements said about Love's development as the starter. "But then you’ve (also) got to play the game without a conscience. If you make a mistake, you’ve got to learn from it — but try not to repeat it. Then what also impacts (your development) are your teammates. As a quarterback, you get more credit than you deserve and if things go bad, you get more blame. There are 11 guys on offense and everyone has to do what they’re supposed to do to be successful."

Giving Love as many reps as possible this summer makes sense, on paper, but one fear is that he could suffer an injury during what is essentially a meaningless game.

As indicated by both ESPN and Ourlads, fifth-round draft pick Sean Clifford is on track to serve as Love's primary backup and presumably will play in the event that the 2020 first-round choice isn't available for any reason this fall.
