The Green Bay Packers famously traded Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders for a first and second round pick in this year’s NFL Draft. The Packers used these picks to select Quay Walker and trade up for wide receiver Christian Watson. Joining Adams in Las Vegas is last season’s Packers special teams coordinator, Maurice Drayton. Drayton is a special teams assistant with the team. Ironically, last year’s special teams coordinator and interim head coach for the Raiders, Rich Bisaccia, is now the special teams coordinator for the Green Bay Packers. Recently, another Packers free agent, Tyler Lancaster, decided to leave Green Bay for the desert.

Tyler Lancaster in Green Bay

Tyler Lancaster was signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2018. He played four seasons with the Packers, appearing in 59 games, including 21 starts. Lancaster saw most of his snaps on special teams, though, as he was part of both the field goal and punt units.

It was this role that made him draw the ire of Packers fans everywhere. Especially in 2021, Lancaster’s inability to block opposing players rushing the Packers’ kickers became an all-too-familiar sight on Green Bay’s woeful special teams.

Now, it perhaps was not all on Tyler Lancaster. He is, in fact, a defensive lineman. An interior defensive lineman at that. Why did the Packers use him to block the edges on field goal attempts?

It certainly was not the best usage for a player like Lancaster. In any case, the Packers drafted two other interior defensive linemen who would have supplanted Lancaster on the roster anyway. Hopefully he can get a chance to play in a system that takes better advantage of his skill-set.
