Christian Watson had a breakout game against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Green Bay Packers rookie wide receiver was itching to play after being sat out for most of the previous two weeks for concussion concerns. Watson caught three touchdown passes and finished with 107 yards on the day.
Following his first touchdown reception, Watson did a flip in the endzone.
The celebration garnered a lot of attention on social media. Plenty of Packers fans were worried the wide receiver might hurt himself with the post-play antics.
According to Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich spoke about Watson’s display of emotion following the big play. Stenavich said he wouldn’t discourage his wide receiver from doing more backflips:
“If he’s scoring touchdowns, I don’t care what he does.”
The Packers have seen a lot of negative reactions from players and coaches after plays this season.
It’s nice to see the Packers coaching staff embracing positive excitement after big plays. Stenavich is right that players who score touchdowns should be allowed to celebrate.
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick believes players should be excited when they make big plays. It’s an essential part of the game, and it keeps teams from being apathetic on the playing field.
A Packers team with a losing record needs all the energy they can get during game day.
