Packers place tremendous trust in QB Jordan Love after contract extension

The Packers proved they have plenty of faith in QB Jordan Love after his new contract extension.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Green Bay and Love agreed to a one-year contract extension with $13.5M guaranteed and worth up to $22.5M on Tuesday. Love's new deal is cheaper than his fifth-year option, a one-year contract extension with $20.27M guaranteed, per Spotrac.

In three seasons, Love — replacing Aaron Rodgers after Green Bay traded him to the Jets — has only appeared in 10 games with one start, throwing for 606 yards, three TDs and three interceptions.

Green Bay giving the 24-year-old QB less money was the correct move since he's unproven, and it should wait to make a considerable commitment.

Extending him was perceptive, however, because it should make the former first-round pick feel like he's getting more than a one-year tryout.

After the Packers didn't draft a WR or TE in the first round and drafted another QB (Sean Clifford in the fifth round), re-affirming Love's job security is essential.

Love already faces enough pressure trying to succeed Rodgers, a four-time league MVP and Green Bay's all-time passing TD leader (475).

If the Packers get solid QB play, they could quickly turn around after missing the playoffs in 2023. HC Matt LaFleur has a 47-19 record in four seasons, and 23-year-old wideout Christian Watson tied for 15th in receiving TDs in 2022 (seven in 14 games).

Fifteen years ago, Rodgers was in Love's shoes usurping former Packers QB and Pro Hall of Famer Brett Farve. Green Bay hopes history repeats itself, so it could be extending Love to inspire confidence.
