Packers reportedly trying to keep WR Allen Lazard

Allen Lazard wasn't really the No. 1 receiver the Green Bay Packers were hoping he could be in 2022. That's okay, frankly, because those expectations were unrealistic.

Lazard went undrafted out of Iowa State in 2018 and worked his way up from being a practice squad player to one of Aaron Rodgers' most trusted receivers.

He's never been superstar material as an NFL wide receiver, but he's been consistent and has played an important role for Green Bay over the past few seasons.

Now set to be a free agent, Lazard has the opportunity to test the market and see what other teams feel about his potential. He could also go back to Green Bay if the Packers want him and offer him a contract.

For much of this offseason that's seemed unlikely, though, because it made sense that Lazard would be looking for more than what the cash-strapped Packers would be able to offer.

There is a new report from Matt Lombardo that suggest the Pack is working on trying to bring back the veteran receiver, though.

Interestingly enough, Lombardo is reporting that sources are telling him the Packers like Lazard no matter who the quarterback is moving forward.

He clearly has the trust of Rodgers, but the Pack apparently like Lazard as a steady option downfield for Jordan Love as well — if they end up moving forward with him.

"Lazard has obviously proven to be a scheme fit with the Packers. Green Bay is trying to keep him. Now, it comes down to whether the two sides are able to reach a deal before free agency opens," Lombardo said.

Again, Lazard is not a superstar, but if the money works, he would be a great No. 2 or No. 3 option for either Rodgers or Love in 2023 and beyond.

Throw in his ability as a blocker and the Packers' desire to be a run-focused offense, and it does make sense that Green Bay would like to keep Lazard if he's willing to take a team-friendly deal.

It will be interesting to see if the Packers let him hit the open market and if so if another team decides he's worth overpaying. Lazard may be looking for WR1 money, but as mentioned, he's better as a second or third option.
