Packers rookie WR Christian Watson could become Aaron Rodgers' top target

The Green Bay Packers needed to address the wide receiver position this offseason. That is an understatement. After the team parted ways with franchise legend and arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL in All-Pro Davante Adams, along with speedster Marquez Valdes-Scantling, the team needed to find more options for back-to-back MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Green Bay ended up bringing in four new receivers, including three rookies. Veteran WR Sammy Watkins signed a one-year deal with the team earlier in the offseason. Then, GM Brian Gutekunst drafted North Dakota State's Christian Watson (second round), Nevada's Romeo Doubs (fourth round) and Nebraska's Samori Toure (seventh round) in this year's NFL Draft.

Watson is not only the headliner of this particular group of rookies, but he might just be the headliner of the entire 2022 rookie WR class. The Florida native has a unique set of physical characteristics. He stands at 6-5 and weighs 210 pounds, but he also runs a 4.3 40-yard dash. At that size, running that fast is incredible. He can line up anywhere on the offense and can run any route. Jet sweeps are also a specialty of his. He can also handle return duties if need be.

Watson, on paper, has all the talent in the world, but that is the case for most NFL players. They still have to go out and prove it. Watson definitely proved it at OTAs earlier this month. The 1,000-yard all-purpose receiver showed off his hands and speed while also gaining some valuable experience during first-team reps at practice. That experience came in the form of catching passes from a future first-ballot Hall of Famer while running routes against Pro Bowl CB Jaire Alexander. He tested the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL while also catching some deep passes from Rodgers and backup QB Jordan Love.

After Day 1 of mandatory minicamp, Watson was in awe of Rodgers.

"It's crazy to be here and play with him," the former NDSU star said.

Rodgers is equally in awe of the rookie. No. 12 was actually the first person who texted Watson after Green Bay traded up to select him in the second round of April's NFL Draft.

It's clear that Rodgers and Watson already have a great connection off the field. With Watson's physical traits and talent, along with the ridiculous ability of Rodgers, that duo could be very, very special in 2022. Especially with the uncertainty surrounding the receiver room in Green Bay, Watson appears to have the inside track on becoming a massive contributor for head coach Matt LaFleur and this Packers offense.
