Packers signing former first-round pick Blake Bortles to one-year deal

The Green Bay Packers are set to welcome quarterbacks Chad Kelly and Kurt Benkert on a tryout basis for rookie minicamp later this week and are now reportedly adding a veteran to the active roster.

ESPN's Adam Schefter (h/t Rob Demovsky) reports that 2014 first-round pick Blake Bortles is signing a one-year contract with the Packers. Bortles will be the third QB on the roster behind disgruntled starter Aaron Rodgers and 2020 first-round pick Jordan Love, and Demovsky added this signing likely has nothing to do with Rodgers' unhappiness and potential refusal to play another down for the club.

Bortles worked under Green Bay offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett when the two were with the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2015-18. The 29-year-old signal-caller was drafted by Jacksonville third overall in 2014 but parted ways with that organization after the 2018 season.

He last appeared in a regular-season contest with the Los Angeles Rams in December 2019.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst has repeatedly insisted he isn't trading Rodgers but said after Green Bay didn't draft a QB that he would "add a third arm and maybe a fourth arm" ahead of training camp.
