Panthers' Baker Mayfield reportedly out two to six weeks with high-ankle sprain

Carolina Panthers starting quarterback Baker Mayfield has received both good and bad news regarding the high-ankle sprain he suffered in this past Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Tuesday that tests on Mayfield's ankle revealed no other structural damage, but it is nevertheless believed the first pick from the 2018 NFL Draft could be sidelined anywhere from two-to-six weeks.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero added that Mayfield is not going on injured reserve as of Tuesday afternoon:

A healthy Mayfield left plenty to be desired with his performances across his first five starts for the 1-4 Panthers. ESPN stats note that he's currently last among eligible quarterbacks with a 71.9 passer rating, 16.6 total QBR, and 54.9% completion percentage on the season. He's passed for four touchdowns and four interceptions.

It's widely believed Mayfield's poor play contributed to the firing of coach Matt Rhule which was announced on Monday.

With backup Sam Darnold still out due to the ankle injury he suffered in August, third-choice option P.J. Walker is on track to start for Carolina at the 2-3 Los Angeles Rams this coming Sunday. It's assumed interim coach Steve Wilks could go with Walker until further notice if the 27-year-old impresses while both Mayfield and Darnold are spectators.
