Panthers believe defensive line can play better

Having not recorded a sack since Thanksgiving day, there may be some growing concerns with the Carolina Panthers defensive line.

The Panthers, however, are keenly aware of this fact.

"There’s a lot of talent on this D-line. Period," starting defensive end Kony Ealy said Wednesday. "And it’s not helping with the ball coming out as fast as it’s been coming out. I mean, all we have to do is keep rushing. Period. That’s it."

Still, even with opposing teams getting the ball out quicker, defensive coordinator Sean McDermott knows his players have to do better.

“We’ve got to affect the quarterback better, no doubt,” McDermott said.

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera in particular has felt the frustration from his defensive line.

"They should be frustrated. They should be upset with themselves. And they’re working to get better," Rivera said. "I had a great conversation with some of those guys, the biggest thing I told them is you’re pressing. You’re trying to force things to happen. The play doesn’t care who makes it."

Rivera added that he hopes his players aren't overthinking things.

"Just just go out and play and see what happens," Rivera said. "Don’t force things to happen. We’ve got some guys that have a tremendous amount of talent who are just way too close to not be making the plays."

The 14-1 Carolina Panthers will look to lock up home-field advantage for the playoffs with a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.
