Panthers officially announce Ben McAdoo as offensive coordinator

It was reported on Friday that the Carolina Panthers were set to name former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo as their new offensive coordinator.

The Panthers confirmed that appointment on Monday.

McAdoo originally joined the Giants as their offensive coordinator for the 2014 season, and it was heavily believed at the time that ownership viewed him as a potential successor for head coach Tom Coughlin. After the Giants controversially parted ways with Coughlin following the 2015 campaign, they named McAdoo as their new head coach, and he took Big Blue to the playoffs in his first year in charge.

However, the 2017 Giants lost their first five games, and McAdoo's decision to bench starting quarterback Eli Manning in favor of Geno Smith in Week 13 directly led to his firing and to the dismissal of general manager Jerry Reese.

As noted by the Panthers' website, McAdoo spent the 2020 season as the Jacksonville Jaguars' quarterbacks coach. He worked as a consultant for the Dallas Cowboys this past campaign.

Carolina head coach Matt Rhule was in need of a new assistant after he elected to fire Joe Brady in early December. Per ESPN's David Newton, running backs coach Jeff Nixon served as a temporary play-caller following Brady's ouster.
