Panthers QB Baker Mayfield: Suspension of Browns' Deshaun Watson 'none of my business'

Quarterback Baker Mayfield is spending his summer competing with Sam Darnold for the right to be named the Carolina Panthers' Week 1 starter. Mayfield's former employer dominated a bulk of sports headlines on the first day of August.

NFL disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson has ruled that Cleveland Browns signal-caller Deshaun Watson should be suspended for six games over violations of the league's personal conduct policy regarding numerous allegations of sexual misconduct during massage sessions. The Browns acquired Watson from the Houston Texans via a blockbuster trade in March and then shipped Mayfield to Carolina early last month, and the 27-year-old was asked about Judge Robinson's ruling on Monday afternoon.

"Honestly, it's none of my business," Mayfield said on the matter, per David Newton of ESPN. "I don't play against the other quarterback. I know it's the most cliché thing to say, but that's just the truth.

"I'm paid to play quarterback and lead this team, not to make decisions on anything other than that."

Carolina hosts Cleveland in Week 1 on Sept. 11. As things stand today, backup Jacoby Brissett will be QB1 for the Browns on that Sunday afternoon.

"If I'm playing or not, I'm trying to help this team win," Mayfield remarked about possibly facing former Cleveland teammates in the regular-season opener. "That's my mindset going into it. I'm not focused about Week 1 right now. I'm working on each day's install and trying to get better."
