Panthers reportedly expected to hire former Giants HC Ben McAdoo as OC

The New York Giants made headlines on Friday by selecting Buffalo Bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen as their new GM. Later in the day, it was reported that a former head coach of the G-Men appears to be headed to an NFC South squad for a vacant offensive coordinator position.

The Panthers were reportedly conducting a second round of interviews for the remaining candidates as late as Thursday, with former Washington head coach Jay Gruden among the finalists.

McAdoo began his coaching career with three years in the college game from 2001 to 2003. The Homer City, Penn., native served as a special teams/offensive assistant with Michigan St., then moved to Fairfield University to become offensive line/tight ends coach and finally held the role of offensive assistant with Pittsburgh in 2003.

The now-44-year-old joined the NFL ranks with the New Orleans Saints in 2004 when he was their offensive line/quality control coach and held the title of assistant offensive line coach/quality control with the San Francisco 49ers in 2005.

McAdoo began his longest-tenured NFL gig to date in 2006 when he became the Green Bay Packers' tight ends coach, a position he stayed in until 2011. He then switched to the role of quarterbacks coach for the Packers and held that title until 2013.

During his run with Green Bay, the franchise won its fourth (and most recent) Super Bowl in 2010. McAdoo was the offensive coordinator of the Giants in 2014 and 2015 and then their head coach in 2016 and most of 2017 before being fired after a 2-10 start.

His most recent NFL job was a one-year stay with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2020 as their quarterbacks coach. As a head coach, McAdoo posted a 13-15 record in the regular season and 0-1 mark in the playoffs.
