Panthers 'still open' to re-signing Cam Newton

Cam Newton's return to Carolina was one of last season's most fun storylines, even if it didn't produce eye-popping results. Now, it looks like that homecoming has the chance to be extended.

The Panthers are open to bringing back Newton -- who is currently a free agent -- for next season, according to general manager Scott Fitterer. The news came in a report on the Panthers' website in which he discussed the team's future at the quarterback position.

"We're still open to Cam," Fitterer said. "But again, we want to have that conversation with him directly."

Newton signed on with Carolina in the middle of last season after spending the opening months as a free agent. He played the 2020 season with the Patriots, but didn't return to New England after the team drafted Mac Jones in the first round.

Over eight games (five starts) with the Panthers in 2021, Newton posted largely pedestrian stats. He logged a 54.8 percent completion rating, 684 yards and just four touchdowns in contrast to five interceptions. He rushed for 230 yards on 47 attempts, finding the end zone five times on the ground.

Carolina also currently has Sam Darnold on the roster, and he is currently under contract for $18.9 million guaranteed next season. He threw for 2,527 yards last season on a 59.9 completion percentage to go with nine touchdowns and 13 interceptions.

The Panthers reportedly will sit down with Newton prior to free agency opening on March 16.
