Parris Campbell latest addition to Giants' retooled passing attack

When the New York Giants invested $160 million in quarterback Daniel Jones, it was assumed they would also make an effort to surround the 25-year-old QB with a better supporting cast.

They’ve done just that through free agency, agreeing on a one-year, $3 million deal with former Indianapolis Colts receiver Parris Campbell, according to multiple reports. The move reunites Campbell with Giants wide receivers coach Mike Groh, whom he played for in 2020 and 2021.

Campbell posted career highs in 2022 in receptions (63), targets (91), yards (623) and touchdowns (three) while working with three different Colts quarterbacks — Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger and Nick Foles.

The Giants had the 26th-ranked passing offense in 2022, averaging just 185.7 yards per game. Now, the 25-year-old Campbell joins a revamped group of pass catchers that includes tight end Darren Waller, whom the Giants traded for on Tuesday; Sterling Shepard, whom the team re-signed on Sunday; and Isaiah Hodgins, who re-signed on a one-year deal on Feb. 27.

Waller gives New York perhaps its first legitimate No. 1 tight end since Jeremy Shockey. He had back-to-back 1,100-yard seasons in 2019 and 2020, and he’s had 90 or more targets three of the last four years.

Though he’s been limited to just 10 games over the last two years, Shepard recorded 55 or more catches and 575 or more years in each of his first five years with the Giants. He also caught a career-high eight touchdowns as a rookie in 2016.

Hodgins, a midseason addition after beginning the year with the Bills, enjoyed a breakout year, logging 33 receptions, 351 yards and four touchdowns in eight games in New York.
