Pat McAfee files for dismissal of Brett Favre's defamation lawsuit

Sports media personality Pat McAfee has filed for dismissal of Brett Favre's defamation lawsuit related to coverage of the NFL Hall of Famer's Mississippi welfare fund scandal.

It was reported in early February that Favre was suing both McAfee and Shannon Sharpe due to the ongoing coverage of the scandal.

Mississippi's state auditor has accused the former quarterback and named him in a civil lawsuit that detailed the biggest welfare fraud case in the state's history. It's been reported that $77 million in welfare money earmarked for the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program had gone elsewhere.

Favre's lawsuit against McAfee says that the former NFL punter has called the Green Bay Packers legend a "thief" and has argued that he was "stealing from poor people in Mississippi."

Despite the scandal raging on, Favre has yet to be charged with a crime. However, other parties in the case have already gone to prison, including former Department of Human Services Director John Davis, who was sentenced to 32 years after pleading guilty to five counts of conspiracy and 13 counts of fraud against the government.

Per the civil lawsuit and state audit, the 53-year-old three-time MVP was paid $1.1 million from the funds for speeches that he never made. Favre did eventually pay back the $1.1 million but was sued by the state of Mississippi for $228,000 in interest.

Furthermore, the University of Southern Mississippi -- Favre's alma mater and the place where his daughter was playing college volleyball at the time -- also received $5 million of the TANF funds that, according to the state audit, Favre had lobbied for via text messages with state officials.

In early March, No. 4's lawyer said in an appearance on 'The Daily Wire's "Crain & Company" that the case against McAfee was a "slam dunk."
