Patrick Mahomes: It's crazy Eric Bieniemy hasn't gotten a head-coaching job

The Houston Texans are the only team remaining with a head-coaching vacancy for the 2021 campaign. Deshaun Watson's ideal coach, Eric Bieniemy, is still on the market.

There's still a chance Bieniemy lands the Texans' job, but Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes on Friday discussed his confusion about why Bieniemy hasn't yet been hired to lead a franchise.

"It's crazy, would be the best word to describe it," Mahomes said, as transcribed by Pro Football Talk. "To see the stuff that comes out and then knowing the man that he is and the coach that he is every single day, you don't understand where the stuff comes from. You understand how great of a coach he is, how great of a person he his, how great of a leader he is. And so, it's crazy that he hasn't gotten his chance to become a head coach.

"But I promise you, he'll keep grinding and keep getting better and better and keep helping us out — which is a positive at the end of the day. And, hopefully, help us continue to go to these AFC Championship Games and go to more Super Bowls."

Bieniemy drew interest from the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers and New York Jets, all of whom have hired a new head coach. Here's who those teams hired:

  • Falcons: Former Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith
  • Lions: Former New Orleans Saints assistant head coach/tight ends coach Dan Campbell
  • Jaguars: Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer
  • Chargers: Former Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley
  • Jets: Former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh

Bieniemy is in his eighth season with the Chiefs and third as offensive coordinator. He previously served as the team's running backs coach from 2013-17.

According to Pro Football Talk, Mahomes recommended Bieniemy to Watson last offseason. The former Texas Tech quarterback admitted Friday that he might reach out to Watson again when the Super Bowl is over.
