Will Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes get cleared to play in Sunday's AFC Championship Game? Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Patrick Mahomes practices for second day; status for Sunday still unclear

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes took another major step towards playing in Sunday's AFC Championship Game, as he participated in the team's full practice for the second day in a row, this time with a helmet, according to The Athletic's Nate Taylor.

Mahomes is currently in concussion protocol after exiting the Chiefs' divisional-round win over the Cleveland Browns. The quarterback appeared to suffer the injury while being tackled on a short run, as he seemed to have trouble walking after the play. His status for Sunday remains unclear, as he has made some progress but still has not been cleared given the recency of the concussion.

In his third season as the starter in Kansas City, Mahomes has continued to have perhaps the most impressive start to a career in NFL history. While he is unlikely to win MVP due to Aaron Rodgers' incredible season, Mahomes was still nothing short of spectacular, throwing for over 4,700 yards and 38 touchdowns while securing the Chiefs the no. 1 seed in the AFC. The fourth-year quarterback was also impressive in the postseason, completing over 70% of his passes against the Browns before leaving the game.

If Mahomes is unable to play against the Buffalo Bills, backup quarterback Chad Henne will take his place. Henne took over when Mahomes was ruled out against the Browns and did just enough to help the Chiefs hold onto their lead and win the game. But without Mahomes, the Chiefs would be massive underdogs to the Bills, who have one of the most potent offensive attacks in the entire NFL.
