Patriots' Cam Newton does not have broken hand, undergoing more tests

The New England Patriots were in headlines earlier on Friday when reports surfaced that starting quarterback Cam Newton prematurely ended his session during Friday's organized team activities because of an unspecified injury to his throwing hand.

While the exact nature of the setback is unknown, Karen Guregian of the Boston Harold reports Newton did not suffer a fractured hand but is undergoing further testing. Guregian added the one-time regular-season Most Valuable Player remained on the field through the rest of practice but was a spectator.

Newton signed a one-year contract to return to the Patriots for a second season in March after a relatively disappointing debut campaign with the club. That was before New England selected Alabama Crimson Tide signal-caller Mac Jones with the 15th overall pick of this year's NFL Draft, but head coach Bill Belichick has thus far insisted he's sticking with Newton as his QB1 for now.

Last week, New England wide receiver Kendrick Bourne gushed over Jones. "He has a swag to him that I didn't know that he had at first," Bourne said of the rookie at that time. "He's out there confident, and that is what you need in a quarterback. Good energy, awesome guy, comes to work and you just can feel his energy and leadership already."
