Patriots HC Jerod Mayo confirms status of Bill Belichick's sons
Jerod Mayo appeared on WEEI's "The Greg Hill Show" on Monday morning for the first time since being named the head coach of the New England Patriots.
Mayo discussed numerous topics, including the status of Bill Belichick's sons, Brian and Steve. The former has served as the team's safeties coach since 2020, while the latter joined the Patriots as a defensive assistant in 2012.
Albert Breer first reported last week that both sons had been offered jobs to stay with the team as part of Mayo's staff.
Steve Belichick was the team's defensive play-caller and outside linebackers coach last season.
Though nothing's official yet, it's been heavily reported that the elder Belichick is the favorite to land the Atlanta Falcons head-coaching gig. The three-time AP Coach of the Year has had two interviews for the job, the second of which reportedly included numerous members of Falcons brass.
If the 71-year-old gets hired by Atlanta (or elsewhere), his sons could very well follow him to the new organization.
Mayo was hired to succeed Belichick on Jan. 12 and is now the youngest head coach in the NFL at 37 years old. He played eight seasons from 2008-15 (all with New England) that included an AP Defensive Rookie of the Year award, one first-team All-Pro nod and two Pro Bowl honors and was hired as the Patriots inside linebackers coach in March 2019.
