Patriots in talks to add former NFL head coach to new coaching staff

The New England Patriots could be making another prominent addition to their new coaching staff. According to a report from Monday Morning Quarterback's Albert Breer, the Patriots are in talks to add former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo to Jerod Mayo's coaching staff.

It is not yet known exactly what role McAdoo would have, but Breer speculates it would be in sort of an assistant head coach role to help new offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt.

McAdoo served as the Giants head coach for 28 games during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, posting a 13-15 record before being fired late in the 2017 season.

Prior to that, he was the Giants' offensive coordinator. His lost work in the NFL came during the 2022 season when he was the offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers. He also spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a quarterbacks coach and with the Dallas Cowboys as a consultant.

McAdoo's offenses in New York ranked 13th and sixth in respectively in scoring. He did not have as much success as a head coach or during his one-year stop in Carolina, when they never finished higher than 20th in the NFL.

The Patriots need to do something dramatic to fix their offense as it was not only 31st in the NFL in points during the 2023 season, it was the single biggest reason they did not at least double their win total. There were at least three or four games on their schedule where even a mediocre offense would have easily produced a win. With the addition of Van Pelt, and potentially the addition of McAdoo, they are at least casting a wide net in trying to fix it. Now they just need to get the quarterback position right, which they will have an opportunity to do with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. They should at least have a chance to select Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels from LSU at that spot.
