While the New England Patriots got their guy in the 2024 NFL Draft, there is no guarantee that when the season rolls around, he will be the one leading the team out onto the field.
And one quarterback the Patriots brought in during free agency is going to fight for that role too.
Speaking with ESPN's Mike Reiss, veteran quarterback Jacoby Brissett discussed the upcoming quarterback competition that will be the talk of the NFL during the offseason and preseason.
"That's all out of my control, so I don't really worry about that," Brissett said. "I'm excited to have him on the team, and the other guys as well that we drafted and picked up. I think it's going to be good.
"Competition brings out the best in all of us, so I'm excited about that part," he added and was also asked if he's looking forward to it. "Of course. I wouldn't have came if I didn't."
The Patriots selected Maye with the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft, bringing in a quarterback with a lack of experience, but a load of potential. And since Brissett played with Maye's former UNC teammate Sam Howell while with the Washington Commanders, he learned a bit about the rookie's game.
"I'm a little bit familiar with him, and obviously talking to each other now that we are on the same team," Brissett explained. "So I'm sure that relationship will grow."
At this moment, Jerod Mayo won't say who the starting quarterback will be once the season starts. And that's the right call, with both players having a lot of time to show what they got in the coming months.
So when that first game in September starts, the starter will be the person who will put the Patriots in the best position to win.
This is Brissett's second stint with the Patriots, having been drafted by the team and played with them for a season in 2016. Yet his first time was Bill Belichick leading the charge, so this time aroud, things look different. It's Jerod Mayo's team now.
"It's definitely different than when I was here last time -- neither good nor bad," Brissett said. "You can see the excitement from the guys, and from him and from the coaching staff. So I'm excited for us to keep progressing with this."
