Patriots QB Cam Newton working out with WR Jakobi Meyers, TE Jonnu Smith

New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton recently said that he "feeds off" criticism he sees and hears but apparently realizes he'll need to do more if he wants to remain above first-round draft pick Mac Jones on the depth chart.

As Michael David Smith noted for Pro Football Talk, Newton recently shared a video on Instagram showing him working out with tight end Jonnu Smith and wide receiver Jakobi Meyers.

Smith, formerly with the Tennessee Titans, signed with the Patriots in March on a four-year agreement that could be worth up to $50 million. Last month, he dealt with a hamstring issue during mandatory minicamp.

Per ESPN stats, Meyers led New England last season with 59 receptions, 729 receiving yards and 81 targets.

To Jones' credit, the rookie has said all the right things about his current role on the roster and about everyone working together to improve. Newton is expected to officially be named the starting QB unless he looks completely lost in preseason action, but it may take only a handful of losses or lackluster performances for coach Bill Belichick to turn to Jones before Halloween.
