Patriots reportedly eyeing a reunion with former third-round pick

It’s no secret the New England Patriots need a quarterback. What may be surprising is which QB the team is reportedly considering making a run at in free agency.

Per Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, the Patriots are contemplating bringing back 31-year-old Jacoby Brissett, who spent the 2023 season with the Washington Commanders.

“The Patriots' interest in Jacoby Brissett is real,” Volin tweeted. “They'll have competition for him, but OC Alex Van Pelt loved coaching Brissett in Cleveland in 2022 and the Patriots view him as a great locker room guy who is all about football.”

A third-round pick of the Patriots in 2016, Brissett spent just one season in New England, starting two games, before he was traded in September 2017 to the Indianapolis Colts for receiver Phillip Dorsett.

Brissett started 11 games for the Cleveland Browns in 2022 where his offensive coordinator was Alex Van Pelt, the Patriots' new OC.

Expected to compete for the Commanders’ starting QB job this past season, Brissett, who signed a one-year, $8 million contract last summer, was beaten out during training camp by Sam Howell.

With the Pats expected to move on from Mac Jones before or during the 2024 draft, Brissett could possibly begin next season as the team’s starting QB, allowing them to slowly bring along a passer should they take one with the No. 3 overall pick in April. It’s been speculated that the Patriots are eyeing LSU signal-caller Jayden Daniels.

In eight NFL seasons, Brissett is 18-30 as a starter, throwing for 10,574 yards, 51 touchdowns and 23 interceptions with a passer rating of 85.3. He’s had stints with the Patriots, Colts, Dolphins, Browns and Commanders.
