Patriots wide receiver Mohamed Sanu already working out with Cam Newton

Former MVP Cam Newton wasn't guaranteed the starting quarterback position when he signed a one-year deal with the Patriots on Sunday, but it appears one of New England's wide receivers believes Newton will be QB1 come the start of the regular season.

Mohamed Sanu worked out with Newton late Tuesday afternoon at UCLA, and the two are working on their connection ahead of training camp.

Both players are recovering from recent injuries -- Newton had surgery for a fractured left foot and Sanu underwent a procedure to repair a high ankle sprain. It's no surprise they're working out together, though Sanu shouldn't be banking on Newton being given the starting gig.

The former Carolina Panthers signal-caller will be joining Brian Hoyer, Jarrett Stidham, J'Mar Smith and Brian Lewerke on the Patriots' quarterback depth chart. So, it's become quite clear that there will be a quarterback competition once training camp opens up next month.

The 31-year-old played just two games last season after suffering a foot injury and wasn't great during the 2018 campaign, so it remains to be seen whether or not he has enough gas left in the tank.

If Newton beats out Stidham, it won't be that surprising...especially because he's made 124 career starts, made a Super Bowl appearance and was the league's MVP.
