The New England Patriots have finally received some good news as second-year receiver Tyquan Thornton has returned to practice for the first time this season, according to A to Z Sport's Sophie Weller.
The Patriots now have 21 days to evaluate Thornton and make the decision to activate him or not. Thornton, who has faced injury challenges in his short NFL career, immediately brings an element this team desperately needs: speed. He made headlines at the 2022 NFL combine with his blazing fast 4.28 40-yard dash.
His speed didn't translate to production in his rookie campaign, as he posted just 247 yards in 11 games. However, his presence will add a missing layer to the Patriots' offense, regardless of production. The mere threat of game-breaking speed will force defenses to play the Patriots more spread out than they have been. Through five weeks, teams have forced the Patriots to beat them deep, and that hasn't been an option. Expectations should be tempered for Thornton; he needs to stay healthy. He has appeared in just 11 of a possible 22 games. Still, his presence should add a new wrinkle to the offense. If Thornton can build on his rookie season and take the next step, he may be able to help the team with more than just speed.
