Pete Carroll: Seahawks need to run the ball more in 2021

The Seattle Seahawks entered Saturday's playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams winners of four straight but with an offense that lost momentum as defenses adjusted to a pass-happy scheme meant to let quarterback Russell Wilson "cook."

Following the 30-20 loss to the Rams, Seattle head coach Pete Carroll told reporters on Monday that his team needs to get back to basics next season.

"We have to run the ball better. Not even run the ball better, run it more," Carroll said, as noted by Kevin Patra of the league's official website.

"Frankly, I'd like to not play against two-deep looks all season long," Carroll added.

Wilson was a legitimate Most Valuable Player candidate at the halfway point of the year but ultimately fell well off the pace held by uncrowned award winner Aaron Rodgers and Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Against the Rams, Wilson completed only 11-of-27 passes for 174 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. According to ESPN stats, Wilson was arguably the worst quarterback over wild-card weekend and finished dead last in passer rating (72.1) and second behind only Chicago Bears signal-caller Mitchell Trubisky in total QBR (17.6).

Chris Carson led the Seahawks with 77 rushing yards on 16 carries.

Carroll also said he expects offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer will remain with the club through the offseason.
