Jim Irsay speaks as Peyton Manning and Edgerrin James receive their Hall of Fame rings in 2021.

NFL icon Peyton Manning recently shared an emotional tribute to Jim Irsay, the late Indianapolis Colts owner, highlighting his profound impact on the team and the city of Indianapolis. Irsay, who passed away at the age of 65, was remembered by Manning as a visionary leader who transformed the Colts into a model franchise.

Manning credited Irsay’s steadfast commitment to the team for making Indianapolis a football powerhouse. When Manning joined the Colts in 1998, football was a secondary sport in the city, overshadowed by basketball and auto racing. Under Irsay’s leadership, the franchise evolved, achieving milestones such as a Super Bowl victory in 2006 and the construction of Lucas Oil Stadium, which solidified Indianapolis as a premier destination for major sporting events.

Reflecting on their shared journey, Manning expressed gratitude for the opportunities Irsay provided him. Drafted as the first overall pick, Manning flourished into one of the NFL’s greatest quarterbacks, winning four MVP awards and setting numerous records. He acknowledged that Irsay’s vision and investment in the team were instrumental in both his individual success and the Colts’ rise to prominence.

Irsay’s impact extended beyond football, as he was deeply committed to the Indianapolis community. Manning recalled how Irsay’s devotion to the city and its fans helped create a lasting legacy. From revitalizing the franchise to fostering a winning culture, Irsay’s contributions were transformative.

Just recently, Manning gave his take on the late Jim Irsay. This can be seen in an article done by Zach Bachar for Bleacher Report.

“Look, he was one of a kind,” Manning said during a Thursday appearance on NFL Live (3:30 mark). “We all know him. Anybody that’s gotten to meet him, he was unique. But he loved the Colts, he loved the players that played for him and I’ll always be indebted to him for giving me my chance in the NFL.”

Manning also touched on the reconciliation between himself and Irsay after his 2012 departure from the Colts. Despite the difficult decision to part ways, their relationship was one of mutual respect and admiration, marked by Irsay’s efforts to honor Manning’s legacy with a statue and Ring of Honor induction.

Indianapolis Colts owner & CEO Jim Irsay addresses the media from a golf cart Sunday, July 28, 2024, during the Indianapolis Colts’ training camp at Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield.

As Manning mourned the loss of his former boss, he emphasized Irsay’s uniqueness and passion for the Colts. His heartfelt words underscored the deep bond they shared and the lasting influence Irsay had on the team, the city, and Manning’s career.
