The Pittsburgh Steelers have made some big moves during the 2024 NFL offseason. They have been very active in free agency and on the trade front, reshaping their roster with hopes of ending their playoff drought next season.
Their biggest changes have come on offense. The quarterback depth chart has been totally revamped as not a single quarterback from last season’s roster will be back in 2024.
Kenny Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, while Mitchell Trubisky was released and signed with the Buffalo Bills. Mason Rudolph hit free agency and opted to sign a contract with the Tennessee Titans.
In their place, the Steelers signed veteran Russell Wilson to a one-year deal and acquired Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears in a trade. There will be changes made to the wide receiver depth chart on the team as well.
Diontae Johnson was traded to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for cornerback Donte Jackson with a pick swap. Pittsburgh received a sixth-round pick, while Carolina received a seventh.
With Johnson no longer in the mix, the Steelers don’t have much experience behind George Pickens to rely on. The team released Allen Robinson earlier this offseason, diminishing their depth even further.
Pittsburgh has been linked to wide receivers early in the 2024 NFL Draft, with Rome Odunze emerging as a potential target if the Steelers can move up the board. But, the team could make a move before the draft gets underway.
According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the Steelers are one of the teams who are set to host free agent Mike Williams this week. Williams was released by the Los Angeles Chargers as a cap casualty before the 2024 league year started. Along with Pittsburgh, Williams has visits lined up with the New York Jets and Panthers.
Out of those suitors, the Steelers could likely offer Williams the most prominent role in the passing game as a clear-cut top option along with Pickens. But, all three teams could certainly use some help at wide receiver, which Williams would provide plenty of.
Williams, a first-round pick of the Chargers in 2017, spent the first seven seasons of his career with the franchise. Oozing with dominant potential, injuries got in the way of Williams realizing his full potential in Los Angeles.
When he remains healthy, Williams is a big play threat, averaging 15.6 yards per reception in his career. In 2019, he led the NFL with 20.4 yards per reception and he has two 1,000+ yard campaigns under his belt. Coming off of an ACL tear in 2023, Williams will likely be in line for a one-year prove-it deal this offseason.
