Raiders' Carl Nassib becomes first active NFL player to come out as openly gay
Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib made history on Monday by becoming the first active NFL player on a roster to come out as openly gay.
"I just want to take a quick moment to say that I’m gay," Nassib explained in a video he shared on Instagram, according to Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. "I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now but I finally feel comfortable enough to get it off my chest. I really have the best life. I’ve got the best family, friends and job a guy could ask for. I’m a pretty private person, so I hope you guys know I’m not doing this for attention, but I think representation matters."
The 28-year-old added he's donating $100,000 to The Trevor Project, a nonprofit that works to prevent suicide among LGBTQ youths.
Defensive end Michael Sam came out before the 2014 NFL Draft but never played a regular-season down for any club.
