While it’s a little bit early to think about which players will be free agents next offseason for the Las Vegas Raiders, it isn’t too early to think about what those players need to do in order to establish themselves as long-term options.

One of the players who will enter free agency next season is defensive back Roderic Teamer. Teamer is heading into his third season with the Raiders after re-signing to a one-year contract in the offseason.

Teamer joined the Raiders in June of 2021, and in his career with the Silver and Black, he has posted 58 total tackles and two tackles for loss. According to Pro Football Focus, Teamer allowed 22 receptions on 27 targets in 2022.

Teamer played just 286 snaps last season, but saw his snap count increase towards the end of the season as General Manager Dave Ziegler and Coach Josh McDaniels got a feel for who would be brought back to the team in 2023. Teamer’s special teams play and sharp tackling ability earned him another contract with the team.

Teamer started three games for the Raiders in 2022, the most playing time he has had since becoming a member of the Raiders. He had 24 total tackles and only two missed tackles last season, and only committed two penalties.

A majority of Teamer’s production came in the slot, but he moved around and played in the box as well. His versatility as a defensive back was likely a reason the Raiders brought him back for another season.

The Raiders brought in several defensive backs this offseason, three of which on one-year contracts. Teamer will need to continue his play from the end of last season and remain consistent on special teams to separate himself and earn another contract with the Raiders.

Teamer has shown his value to the Raiders in the last two seasons, and will need to continue to do so if he wants to return to the team after the 2023 season. Whether he gets on the field for more defensive snaps or creates a permanent role for himself as a special teams contributor, he will need to continue to stack good seasons of play.
