Raiders GM wants to stick with plan, but change is required after 2-5 start
"Good things come to those who wait" is an adage you shouldn't say to a 2-5 NFL team.
Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler didn't get the memo.
"We're going to stick with our plan, improve it as we go along and we're confident the results will come," Ziegler said in a Wednesday news conference.
The plan needs a drastic revision. It's driven a 2021 playoff team into the ground. The Raiders are in last place in the AFC West, a disappointment because they have talent on both sides of the ball.
Defensive end Maxx Crosby, wideout Davante Adams, and running back Josh Jacobs are all Pro Bowlers. Yet, the Raiders have an offense and defense that ranks below the league average.
Some struggles fall on head coach Josh McDaniels and quarterback Derek Carr.
McDaniels is already facing questions about job security. According to ESPN's Paul Gutierrez, owner Mark Davis and McDaniels had their second closed-door meeting after a 24-0 loss to the Saints on Sunday, their first shutout loss in eight years.
Carr might be playing with one of the most talented rosters in his nine-year career, but he's not delivering. Through seven games, he's posting an 86.8 passer rating, the third-lowest mark in his career and below the league average.
The head coach and quarterback were supposed to take the team to a new level, but it's holding them back. The Raiders have a 14 percent chance to make the playoffs, per The New York Times.
