Rams kicker saves job with clutch performance vs. Ravens

Lucas Havrisik may have saved his job as the Los Angeles Rams' kicker with his clutch Week 14 performance against the Baltimore Ravens.

Los Angeles cut veteran kicker Mason Crosby on Tuesday, just six days after signing the longtime member of the Green Bay Packers to its practice squad.

Even though the Rams lost to the Ravens, 37-31, in overtime on Sunday, Havrisik had a big game, nailing all three of his field goal attempts and both of his extra-point tries.

The 24-year-old got the high-scoring affair started with a 27-yard field goal in the first quarter, connected on a 51-yarder in the second stanza and sent through a game-tying 36-yard field goal with seven seconds remaining in regulation. It was Havrisik's first career three-field goal game in his six contests, all of which have come this fall with Los Angeles.

It looked like Crosby was bound to replace his younger counterpart this month, as it was reported that the Rams had the "intention" of bringing the 39-year-old up to the active roster in the "near future." Crosby would've been the team's third kicker of the year if he had been promoted.

Brett Maher was signed to Los Angeles' practice squad at the end of August, one day after he was released by the Denver Broncos. Maher was elevated to the active roster ahead of Week 1 and played the first seven games of the season with the Rams, before being released in late October.

Havrisik was then signed off the Cleveland Browns practice squad the same day that Maher was let go. Before his strong showing against Baltimore, he had been 7-for-10 on field goals (3-for-6 from beyond 40 yards) and 10-for-11 on extra points.

Crosby was selected by the Packers in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft and spent 16 seasons with the organization. He won eight NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honors over the years and helped Green Bay win Super Bowl XLV in 2011, making all four of his extra point attempts and his only field goal try in the victory.
