The Los Angeles Rams were faced with preserving the prowess of its offensive line this offseason.

The unit greatly exceeded expectations in 2023, led by the breakout of right guard Kevin Dotson and the emergence of second-round rookie left guard Steve Avila. Although center Coleman Shelton left for free agency, Los Angeles acted quickly, agreeing to terms with interior offensive lineman Jonah Jackson.

General manager Les Snead also made sure to tender left tackle Alaric Jackson, who entered the offseason as a restricted free agent.

On Tuesday, the Rams decided how they’ll attack Jackson’s free agency, placing a second-round tender on him.

This allows Los Angeles “the right of first refusal,” essentially meaning that while Jackson can negotiate anywhere, the Rams will have the opportunity to match any offer he gets and bring him back. If another team pays up and Los Angeles feels better off looking elsewhere, it will receive a second-round pick for his services.

The second-round tender is worth $4.89 million.

Jackson, entering his age-26 season, started 15 games at left tackle this season. He also has experience at right guard and nine snaps at right tackle.

Per Pro Football Focus’ grading, Jackson ranked as the 29th-best tackle among 58 qualified players. That puts him around league average, and given the price tag, is likely something Los Angeles will look to hold on to.

Jackson gave up a single sack in 2023 and played well in the team’s only playoff game, a Wild Card Round loss to the Detroit Lions.

Despite being projected as the weakest link of the Rams offensive line, Jackson is a useful pass protector who committed just three penalties in 2023. If he is to return, he offers Los Angeles continuity on the blindside and a young talent to build around.

The Rams will once again rely on strong play up front to keep an aging Matthew Stafford upright and running back Kyren Williams in position to make plays. Retaining Jackson is a good way to address such an important position.
