Rams rookie QB admits what’s given him the most trouble adjusting to NFL

For the last two seasons, Stetson Bennett ran the one of the more dynamic offense in college football at the University of Georgia.

During the Los Angeles Rams first practice of OTAs, the 25-year-old quarterback confessed he was having a hard time grasping the team’s play calling.

“The first day, I was kind of freaking out about the play calls and stumbling over my words a little bit,” Bennett told reporters. “It’s weird to hear the play call from the earpiece. It’s just completely different from seeing it in signals, which is what we did in college.”

At Georgia, Bennett got his plays from hand signals from coaches on the sideline. Now, the plays are communicated to him through an earpiece in his helmet, and they come in quickly from head coach Sean McVay, who’s a notoriously fast speaker.

“He was very helpful,” Bennett said about his coach. “[He’d say] ‘You’re good, you’re good. Come on. You’ll get through it.’ So I’d have to ask him like twice, but he was helpful with that.”

Bennett completed 65 percent of his passes while throwing for 8,429 yards, 66 touchdowns and 21 interceptions over parts of four seasons at Georgia. He’s expected to compete with Brett Rypien in training camp for the backup quarterback spot behind Matthew Stafford, who’s recovering from a neck injury.
