Ravens Pro Bowler sets internet ablaze by questioning Bill Belichick's greatness
Tom Brady or Bill Belichick — who was the true driving force in the New England Patriots dynasty? This is a debate that rivals the Michael Jordan-versus-LeBron James argument regarding the NBA G.O.A.T.
As of late, the pendulum appears to be swinging in Brady's favor. Since the quarterback departed from Foxborough in 2020, the Patriots have had just one season above .500 and failed to win a playoff game. As for Brady, he made three playoff appearances with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and hoisted a seventh Lombardi Trophy before calling it a career this past offseason.
This season, the Patriots are 0-2 for the first time since 2001. The team's struggles have opened the floodgates for Belichick doubters to question the 71-year-old's legitimacy as an elite NFL head coach.
During a recent episode of the "Punch Line Podcast," Baltimore Ravens Pro Bowl cornerback Marlon Humphrey did just that, pointing to Brady as the true architect of New England's prior success.
"Is Belichick elite or is Tom Brady elite? That's the million-dollar question," Humphrey said. "It's looking more like Brady, but it is what it is."
“I don’t know if Belichick was ever daggum dirty," Humphrey later stated, questioning whether Belichick was ever the premier coach he's touted to be.
The Brady-Belichick era was one for the ages. They won six Super Bowl titles and 249 games together (including the postseason) in New England, the most for a quarterback-coach duo in NFL history. Whether one had a slight edge over the other in delivering overall team success is irrelevant. Both are first-ballot Hall of Famers and all-time legends in their own right.
New England will attempt to get in the win column this week with a divisional matchup against the New York Jets. Belichick is 37-11 against the Jets as Patriots head coach. New England's 14-game win streak against the Jets is the second-longest active streak in the NFL.
