The Baltimore Ravens activated fullback Patrick Ricard from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list on Monday, and the versatile player is ready to find his role in a new offense that does not exactly have a need for his position.

Despite being named to the Pro Bowl the last four seasons as a fullback, Ricard worked out at a new position in his return to training camp on Monday. The 6-foot-3, 305-pound fullback received reps along Baltimore's offensive line.

The reason for Ricard working out at a new position stems from the schematic changes Baltimore has made during the offseason. The Ravens hired Todd Monken to take over as offensive coordinator and his scheme does not utilize the fullback position heavily. Under former offensive coordinator Greg Roman, Ricard played a crucial role in a run-heavy game plan.

The Ravens could save roughly $2 million in cap space by cutting Ricard, per Parker Hurley of Ebony Bird

Since Baltimore can save money by releasing Ricard, the versatile fullback is aiming to make himself a valuable piece again by serving a hybrid role in the new offense.

Ricard is best known for his blocking capabilities, but he has also hauled in 40 receptions for 241 receiving yards and five touchdowns in his six-year career with Baltimore

His position may be going the way of the dinosaur in the modern football game, but Ricard's rare skillset warrants a place on Baltimore's roster. If Ricard makes the final roster, he could serve as an additional offensive lineman, a fourth tight end, or even an extra pass blocker in the Ravens' backfield.
